WHAT IS GROUP THERAPY AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
Group therapy is the process of solving emotional problems by talking and bonding with a group of people facilitated by a professionally trained group therapist. The process of change will be unique to your particular situation and history. How you begin to relate to the group will help you to determine how you will go about changing yourself and your life.
My groups are designed specifically for gay men who are committed to moving forward in their lives and connecting with other men who face similar challenges and obstacles. The main focus is on group members relating to and bonding with each other, and transforming what problems/issues may arise during this process. As a licensed therapist I facilitate the group professionally, compassionately, and in a way that challenges members to grow and heal.
KEVIN AVILA'S THERAPY GROUPS:
Individual screening and preparation makes for stronger, healthier groups. After leading groups for nearly 10 years I have found that it helps if I meet individually with each person for 1-2 sessions, depending on whether you have been in therapy or other groups before. The first appointment allows us to see if we are a good "match", whether we feel we can work well together and that you would benefit from being in one of my groups. I use a collaborative approach, which means that we will work together to see if the type of therapy group I lead is the best way for you to get help at this point in your life. As with any therapy, it is important that you feel the therapist understands and can be of help to you. If we agree that you would benefit from and be able to contribute to one of my groups we will talk about what you want to get out of being in group and we will write a list of your goals.
LOGISTICS
My therapy groups are long-term, open-ended, and they have been running for a number of years. When a member decides to leave we welcome a new member only after processing (talking about and expressing feelings about) the transition. Members generally stay in group 1-2 years. Men of Color, Different HIV Serostatus, and Men with Disabilities are welcome. Call at anytime to discuss questions or to schedule a group consultation session to determine if group is right for you.
